HBT: Millwood contemplating retirement

Kevin Millwood pitched decently for the Mariners this this season before a sore shoulder put an early end to things this month, but the impending free agent told Greg Johns of MLB.com yesterday that he?s not sure whether he wants to come back for another season.

?I?m going to go home and just relax and play with my kids and see what happens, see how I feel and see what pops into my head,? Millwood said Friday. ?I don?t have any definite plans right now on next year, but I?m sure at some point in the offseason it?ll hit me on what I want to do.?

?I knew I wanted to play this year,? he said. ?But like I said, now I?m just trying to figure out physically if I can do it. I still definitely believe I can get people out, but whether it?s time to stay home and spend more time with my kids or try it again, I don?t know the answer to that yet.?

Millwood signed a minor league deal with the Mariners last offseason and made the team out of spring training. The 37-year-old right-hander ended up posting a 4.25 ERA and 107/56 K/BB ratio over 161 innings in 28 starts. And he wasn?t just a Safeco Field creation either, as his ERA was only slightly higher on the road (4.35) than it was at home (4.15). Still, it?s unlikely any team will give him much of a guarantee at this point, so he?s understandably thinking about whether it?s worth trying to put his body through another season.

Millwood has a 169-152 record and a 4.11 ERA over 16 major league seasons. While he has averaged an unspectacular 6.9 K/9 for his career, he ranks 59th all-time with 2,083 strikeouts. He is the active leader in strikeouts among right-handed pitchers.

Belfast Covenant parade begins peacefully

A contentious Unionist parade passed a Catholic church in Belfast went
off without incident, but residents have accused the marchers of
breaking rules.

More than 2,000 Orangemen from north Belfast lodges were surrounded by a heavy police presence as they marched towards City Hall to take part in a massive loyal order parade to mark the centenary of the signing of the pro-Union Ulster Covenant.

An estimated 30,000 marchers are taking part in the Orange Order march - from the City Hall to the grounds of the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont in east Belfast.

Unionists agreed with the Parades Commission to play only hymns along Donegall Street - from the Carrick Hill junction to Royal Avenue - as they passed St Patrick's Church near the city centre.

Locals had requested that no music be played outside the church.

The place of worship has been the scene of disorder at points during the summer after a band was accused of playing sectarian music outside it on July 12.

Protesters and residents claimed the bands breached the rules set by the Parades Commission by playing the most famous Unionist anthem - The Sash - before reaching the end of the stretch.

Carrick Hill Residents Association chairman Frank Dempsey said they had flouted the rules.

"That determination has been smashed," said Mr Dempsey.

"Some of the bands, yes, they did stick by it, there's no problem there. But a number of them bands broke that."

The local man insisted he was not nitpicking over the rules set by the commission.

"You saw the way they danced there with the drum and that's supposed to be a hymn," he said.

But, Father Michael Sheehan, administrator of St Patrick's, said while some of the bands beat their drums exuberantly, he believed they showed respect during the 20-minute march outside the church.

He insisted the talks with the Parades Commission had been fruitful, saying continued dialogue was needed to avoid future trouble.

"They marched with dignity down the road," added Fr Sheehan.

"I think a degree of respect was shown that hasn't been shown before."

Lodges including the Pride of Ardoyne and Pride of the Shore played Abide With Me and Onward Christian Soldiers, as spectators looked on.

Police were on high alert, with up to 50 Land Rovers stationed along the flashpoint at St Patrick's.

The massive parade will finish at Stormont with a cultural festival held to commemorate the 1912 proclamation against plans for Home Rule in Ireland.

Other contentious sections of the participants' journeys to and from the main meeting point at Stormont will also be monitored by police.

The commission has also placed the sacred music restriction on those bands that will pass St Matthew's Catholic Church in Newtownards Road close to Stormont.

Politicians from across the political divide have appealed for calm at the event which is set to be one of the biggest loyal order parades seen in Belfast.

Greece's 2013 budget to deepens cuts, sustain recession

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece will unveil a draft budget for 2013 on Monday which will cut deeper into public spending to impress international lenders but also prolong the economic pain of the Greek people.

Athens is keen to see its bailout funding resume as its next 31.5 billion euro tranche has been pushed back while inspectors from the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund decide if its current program of cuts is on track.

Greeks are bracing for more pain to bring the country's public finances closer to a primary surplus - where all spending other than debt interest is covered by taxes - a milestone on the road to coming to grips with its debt mountain.

Greek police clashed with hooded rioters as tens of thousands took to the streets of Athens on this week in the country's biggest anti-austerity protest in more than a year.

Greece becomes the latest euro zone member to tighten their budget further, with Spain and France this week also seeking to prove they can make the cuts needed to keep lenders and markets onside.

Next year's budget will include more cuts in public sector pay, pensions and welfare benefits as part of an 11.5 billion euro austerity package of savings that will be spread out over the next two years.

"It's going to be a tough budget, projecting a sixth year of recession," a senior government official told Reuters. "It will focus on further savings, incorporating measures agreed by the political leaders."

"This budget will be another step to get the country closer to financial independence, reducing the state's operating costs," the official said.

After weeks of haggling over budget cuts, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's allies in the coalition government have struck a deal on the composition of the package of savings and are ironing out the final details.

Athens needs to seal the deal soon so it can push the austerity package through parliament before an October meeting of euro zone finance ministers.

Another government official who declined to be named told Reuters next year's draft budget will embody a substantial chunk of some 7.5 billion euros of spending cuts that are part of the austerity package.

Struggling to shrink its budget hole to 7.3 percent of national output this year from 9.1 percent in 2011, Greece will likely miss the target as a percentage of GDP as its economy slumped by a deeper-than-projected 7 percent.

The EU Commission had forecast an economic contraction of 4.7 percent in 2012 but belt-tightening took a bigger toll on economic activity, suppressing domestic demand and driving the jobless rate to a record 24.4 percent.

As a result, this year's primary deficit - which excludes debt servicing costs - will also exceed a targeted 1.0 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). The finance ministry expects the primary deficit at 1.5 percent of national output.

"The new budget will be challenging. The government will need to generate a primary surplus for the first time in many years," said Eurobank economist Platon Monokroussos.

"Based on my estimates, Greece needs a primary surplus of at least 1.5 percent of GDP to stabilise and start a gradual reduction of its public debt-to-GDP ratio," he said.

Should I write my personal story? And what about publishing it ...

Several years ago I went to a writing conference that drew in authors and agents, and it was a good conference?until Sunday morning. The last panel was composed of mainly agents, discussing publishing. They worked it up to a feverish point and concluded by expressing the view that the publishing world had collapsed, there had been major changes, and basically we attendees were probably not going to be published ? and self-publishing was frowned upon by the traditional publishing world. The room fell silent. Wait, I just spent a thousand dollars to come here and discover there?s no hope? It was a downer that ruined the whole event, and I left for home stunned.

I?m always skeptical about conferences now. Agents come?looking for that author and story that?s going to make money. It?s business, after all. They look for people with platforms ? national champions, football heroes, a country music star, the frat boy who spent a summer in Central Park with the homeless, someone with a lot of media attention. Someone who can draw crowds and produce a best-selling book.

I was reminded of this the other day when I read Chip?s blog at MacGregor Literary. ?Should I write my cool personal story?? I encourage you to read the whole thing, but if you don?t have time, here?s the gist of it.

1. There?s very little market for personal story books.

2. It?s where we are in today?s publishing economy. No matter how successful these books used to be?publishers just aren?t selling enough copies of personal story books to make it worthwhile anymore.

3. Network TV is filled with personal stories (reality shows), there are 20 million blogs, and the web is filled with people who want to tell the world about their stories. There are cool personal stories everywhere ? and they are FREE!

4. The internet is killing nonfiction book sales. People can find the answers to their questions and self-help needs on the web for free.

5. That?s taken away the incentive people have to purchase a personal story book, unless there is a great sense of celebrity or media associated with the book.

Sounds like a real downer, huh?

But Chip goes on to say MORE. And it?s the same thing I?ve heard at creative nonfiction conferences and workshops and the same thing I teach in every venue I have an opportunity to speak.

Consider turning your personal story inside out. Don?t focus on your personal story ? focus on the principles for living that come out of your story. Don?t just use the book to tell what happened ? use the book to share the principles for living you?ve learned, and use your story to illustrate those principles.

In other words, it?s not all about you. Remember the reader. Draw the reader in, give the reader something, teach the reader what you learned while going through your personal experience. Reflect. Make something of your story.

I will never forget?at the first Oxford Creative Nonfiction Conference in 2008, I went through a manuscript critiquing session with Dinty W. Moore. We began discussing my manuscript. Then, he tossed it aside and with a sneer said, ?Who cares?? My mouth dropped open. ?Who cares?? I got his point. And it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

IT?S NOT ALL ABOUT YOU. Get over yourself. Give the reader something. Because if we don?t have readers, we don?t have anything. The reader needs to walk away after reading your story feeling as though he bought something worthwhile. He has spent time with you (gotten to know you as a character) and learned with you and from you something that will help him in life and gained insight that will be valuable if he ever encounters a situation similar to yours. It?s not about you ? it?s about the reader.

I?ve said it a million times: Writing that is all about you will never see the light of day in print.

(And self-publishing, Print on Demand, is very likely the way to go in today?s publishing environment.)

Turning Points: Guest Post by Shannon Messenger (+Giveaway ...

This guest post is part of the Turning Points blog series here on distraction no. 99?in which I asked authors the question:?What was your turning point as a writer??Here, less than a week before her middle-grade debut Keeper of the Lost Cities comes out, is Shannon Messenger?revealing hers?

And keep reading for a chance to win a *signed* finished copy of Keeper of the Lost Cities plus a very meaningful poster!

Guest post by Shannon Messenger

Coming October 2 from Simon & Schuster / Aladdin!

I didn?t want to make the same mistake again.

By mistake, I mean jumping headfirst into a career I knew absolutely nothing about. Like when I switched to a film major, even though I had no idea how Hollywood actually worked (or even what being a film major meant?but that?s a whole other story altogether). A few years later I had a degree I never planned to use, interning experience for jobs I didn?t want, and a whole lot of pride swallowing to do when I made the terrifying decision to leave LA.

But that?s not the turning point I?m here to talk about.

I?m talking about the after.

The part where I realized I?d lost something when I set aside my dreams of writing for the silver screen. I missed sinking into another world and falling in love with the characters and getting swept away in all the excitement as the plot unfolded. I still had stories swirling around in my head?but now I was fighting them, snuffing them out, and the loss made me ache in ways I didn?t fully understand.

The more I missed it, the more I started to wonder if I should try writing again. But not a screenplay?never a screenplay again.

A children?s book.

I had an idea for a middle-grade fantasy series that was refusing to be ignored. And while I knew zero about writing novels, I?d spent years studying screenwriting. Surely everything I?d been taught would still apply. Screenplays couldn?t be that different, could they?

I quickly discovered that yes, yes they were. Of course there were overlaps?but when it came down to it I had no idea what I was doing. And after a few months of dragging embarrassingly bad files to a ?deleted scenes? folder on my laptop, I started to wonder if I should just give up on the whole idea.

But the real problem wasn?t my inexperience with novel writing.

I was struggling to put the proper effort into polishing my craft because the whole thing felt like a waste of time. It seemed pointless to really invest my energy into writing a book if I wasn?t going to try to have it published. And pursuing publication felt too much like chasing another crazy Hollywood dream?and I knew how that had worked out for me. I wasn?t going to commit to something like that again. Not without knowing what I was getting myself into this time.

I tried to do my homework by reading articles and blogs?anything I found that told me about the book business. But none of that could show me what it was really like to be an author. How it would affect my life. And that was the crucial piece of information I needed before I could decide.

So when I heard about an event called Project Book Babe, where a group of children?s authors were teaming up to raise money for a book buyer friend battling breast cancer, I begged my husband to let me buy tickets. Yes it was expensive?and yes it meant driving to Arizona for something that he did not think sounded nearly as exciting as I did?but it was for a great cause, and he agreed it was a perfect chance for me to meet authors at all different stages of their careers and hopefully figure out if this was something I should do with my life.

A few weeks later we made the five-hour trip to Tempe, Arizona. And I?ll confess, I spent most of that drive watching the barren desert landscape whizz by and wondering if I was losing my mind.

I?d walked away from Hollywood because I absolutely did not belong.?The constant networking to get ahead. The inescapable competition.?It just wasn?t?me.?All I?d wanted was an outlet to tell my stories. I?d never had any hunger for fame?and the longer I was around it the more I realized how incredibly destructive fame could be.

But being an author was a level of fame too. A smaller, quieter one. But still?fame. So I didn?t see how publishing could ever be a right fit for me.

Until I got to Project Book Babe.

Poster from the Project Book Babe event

As I sat in that high school auditorium listening to the amazing authors talk about what inspired them and how they felt about their characters and what they loved about writing, it felt like they were speaking for me?not to me. Like they were channeling everything I?d ever thought about storytelling and what I wanted from a career and broadcasting it straight back to me.?And the event was about as un-Hollywood as you get. No red carpet or paparazzi. No special spotlights for the authors who?d sold more books or won more awards. Just ten people?at tables with poster-board signs, answering questions and auctioning off items they?d donated to help raise money for friend?and not because that friend was some uber-powerful publishing mogul who might help further their careers. They were helping her because they cared about her and she?d been an awesome cheerleader for their books and because she deserved it.

These were my kind of people.

And I knew?right there, right then?that this was it.

I was so sure I remember leaning over to my husband and whispering, I can do this.?

This was me. This was a career that fit. And I suddenly wanted it more than I?d ever wanted anything.?Even though I had a lot?to learn. Even though I knew it would be hard. This was it?the dream that was finally worth chasing. And I was going to race after it with everything I had.

I left Project Book Babe armed not only with that newfound determination, but also a new way of approaching my draft. One of the authors had talked about writing everything the character did to get from Point A to Point B?even though it meant throwing lots away at the end?because they discovered amazing things along the character?s journey. It was the exact opposite of how I?d been working, with my rigid outline, and the first day I tried it I had a breakthrough. A new character popped into my story?one who quickly wormed his way through the entire series?and with him in my arsenal the whole plot finally started to come together.

It still took me two more years and twenty drafts (yes, really) to finally tell my story the right way and make it good enough to sell. But all that work paid off. Keeper of the Lost Cities will be published by Simon & Schuster this fall. And I hope it will be the first of many books to come.

Visualized Inside Rovio's HQ

When in Helsinki, or rather Espoo, there's only one thing left to do after stopping by Nokia's glass House -- visit Rovio's HQ. That's right, the company made famous (and filthy rich) by flinging fowl is just a short walk away from Elop and co.'s waterside domain. And, in a bit of perfect timing, we were graciously welcomed into the gaming outfit's office on the eve of its Bad Piggies launch. As you might expect and hope, the walls, doors, floors, couches, desks, soft drinks and even bottles of hand lotion are adorned in all things Angry Birds. There's even a mock-up experience store -- populated with a variety of branded paraphernalia -- sitting pretty in pale green just outside a bank of cubicles. It's everything we ever imagined it to be. But don't just take our words for it. You can check it out for yourself in a video after the break. And now, we're really Finnish(ed).

2012-2016: U.S. COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY SPENDING ?

Spending within the U.S. Communications Industry will increase 5.2% in 2012 to reach $1.189 trillion as consumers and businesses increasingly embrace digital technology and return to spending levels not seen since before the recent worldwide economic downturn, according to the 2012 Forecast released by Veronis Suhler Stevenson (VSS).

The 26th edition of the VSS Communications Industry Forecast 2012-16 found that U.S. Communications Industry spending grew 4.4% in 2011 to $1.129 trillion despite a sluggish economy in which nominal Gross Domestic Product expanded 3.9%. Spending rose at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.7% in the 2006-2011 forecast period, surpassing GDP by a 0.3 percentage point. VSS expects the Communications Industry to grow at a 5.2% CAGR to $1.455 trillion by 2016, almost two times the growth rate during the past five years. At that pace, the Communications Industry will remain the fifth-largest industry among 15 economic sectors in 2016.

Once seen as a trend in only selected pockets of the U.S. Communications Industry, digital communications and services ? encompassing content, technology and user access ? has firmly established itself as the driving force of growth across all of its sectors, segments and subsegments. Through the use of ever-evolving platforms and channels, digital is giving a rising number of communications companies the power to more effectively target and connect with both consumer and business customers. Demand for digital and mobile devices continues to grow steadily, ensuring that there will be a similar increase in the number of end users. Traditional communications companies that relied heavily on print products continue to make the transition to digital, and those that fully embrace it are the ones most likely to remain relevant to their audiences.

In 2006, VSS found that digital-related expenditures represented 16.7% of total Communications Industry spending; it reached 26.5% in 2011, and VSS projects it will grow to 39.3% by 2016. Last year, digital-related expenditures accounted for 25.1% of consumer and advertising spending and 34.6% of institutional spending, and VSS expects those percentages to increase to 39.3% and 48.9%, respectively, by the end of the forecast period.

The importance of digital adoption is fully reflected in the 2011-2016 forecast period. Long-term growth in two Industry Sectors ? Targeted Media and Business & Professional Information & Services ? is expected to be robust. Targeted Media, which includes Branded Entertainment Marketing, Business-to-Business Media, Direct Marketing, Outsourced Custom Content, and Pure-Play Consumer Internet & Mobile Services, will post a 7.4% CAGR in the 2011-16 period, while Business & Professional Information & Services spending will produce a 7.0% CAGR. Consumer and institutional end-users will maintain their strong demand for continuous and faster digital access to information through traditional and emerging channels. This will fuel the desire for the latest computer, internet connectivity and wireless mobile technologies and devices. VSS data confirms the strong growth prospects that exist thanks to digital; for example, spending on Business & Professional Information accessed through mobile devices, particularly vertical industry-specific applications rose 95.6% in 2011 to $2.28 billion.

?Digital?s influence is now a constant and significant factor in every sector, segment and sub-segment of the US Communications industry,? said John Suhler, Co-Founder and President of VSS. ?At the same time as digital technology and innovation continue to spur growth in the industry or propel the communications industry forward, emerging digital media and services are significantly changing consumption habits among both institutional and consumer end-users. These developments will drive digital-related expenditures to constitute nearly 40% of the overall U.S. Communications Industry spending by 2016.?

Communications Industry and Its Sectors and Revenue Streams

The VSS Forecast provides the only 10-year, multi-lens view of the communications industry by six Industry Sectors, four Revenue Streams, 20 segments, more than 100 subsegments, and an exclusive Consumer Media Usage Index tracking time spent with media by consumers, businesses and other institutions. Industry Sectors include Targeted Media, Business & Professional Information & Services, Entertainment & Leisure Media, Education & Training Media & Services, Traditional Marketing, and Traditional Consumer Advertising Media. Revenue Stream components include Advertising, Marketing Services, Institutional End-User, and Consumer End-User. Together, the VSS Forecast and the annual VSS Mid-Term Forecast Update ? to be issued in the [second quarter] of 2013 ? provide the most comprehensive and in-depth views available of the U.S. Communications Industry.
VSS defines Communications spending as dollars invested by advertisers, marketers, consumer end users, and institutional end users in ad-based communications and marketing services, as well as entertainment, information, business and education content, subscriptions, access and services. It does not include spending on hardware, such as videogame consoles; spending on one-on-one telecommunications services, such as landline and mobile phone usage; sales generated by brand marketers through the redeemed value of coupons; or sales through direct marketing vehicles, such as direct response TV.

Digital Has Become a Rising Tide for the Entire Communications Industry

The VSS Forecast defines in detail how digital activities has become intertwined with all aspects of the Communications Industry, and will continue to grow. Within certain, fast-growing areas ? such as the Targeted Media sector ? digital communications is the accelerant. In segments with weakened growth prospects, digital has become a saving grace. For example, VSS projects overall spending on Consumer Book Publishing will decline 2.4% in 2012 and experience a drop in CAGR of 1.1% in the forecast period, but spending in one of its subsegments ? e-books and other digital downloads ? will increase from $1.91 billion in 2011 to $9.40 billion in 2016, representing a CAGR of 37.6%.

Digital communications? growing influence is also witnessed in media consumption rates. Among institutional users, daily media consumption rose 5.3% in 2011 to 1 hour, 41 minutes and 2 seconds per employee, propelled by increased use of business information outside the office through wireless devices. Meanwhile, time spent by persons age 12 and above accessing consumer and business mobile content soared in 2011, rising 46.7% to 15 minutes and 7 seconds daily per person. VSS attributed the jump to increased penetration of wireless devices ? including smartphones, computer tablets and e-readers ? among consumers and institutions.

Media consumption has leveled out, but consumer and business mobile content are taking strong hold. During the forecast period, VSS expects media that exhibited deep declines during the substitution-caused shift to digital platforms, such as Recorded Music and Books, will stabilize as the digital segments of those industries account for the majority of units sold. Technological advancements will continue to drive growth in the consumption of institutional business media, with more companies providing employees with computer tablets and e-readers. Information and services will become more readily available through wireless devices, such as dedicated mobile content specific to a vertical industry.

Key Trends in Forecast Period for Industry Sectors

VSS added the Industry Sector analytical perspective to the Forecast in 2009 in recognition of the communications disruption caused by digital technology and innovation, which has caused the Communications Industry to diverge into six distinct communications ecosystems.

Digital communications platforms exist throughout all six Industry Sectors. VSS expects mobile advertising and marketing segments and subsegments will continue to grow dramatically as mobile and tablet technologies allow for a more dynamic interactive experience, while Internet access spending will remain about flat during the forecast period as household broadband penetration reaches saturation. Pure-play and related traditional related content sites that primarily provide text information will add online video to monetize the fast-growing video advertising market, and display ads will increasingly be bundled with this content as advertising dollars continue to shift to online.

VSS projects that all six Industry Sectors will post CAGR gains in the 2011-2016 period, with the biggest percentage increases coming in Targeted Media, and Business & Professional Information & Services, and the largest increase in spending coming from Targeted Media, which will increase from $200.38 billion in 2011 to $285.97 billion in 2016.

Spending on Targeted Media will increase 7.7% to $215.81 billion in 2012, with overall gains led by strong growth in Branded Entertainment and Pure-Play Internet & Mobile Services. Outsourced Custom Publishing will strengthen, while Direct Marketing and B-to-B Media will post steady but modest gains. Targeted Media will experience a 7.4% CAGR in the forecast period, reaching $285.97 billion in 2016, and fueled by Branded Entertainment and Pure-Play Internet & Mobile Services.

Traditional Marketing spending will grow 4.2% in 2012 to $75.91 billion, buoyed by political campaign spending in certain segments and subsegments, including Public Relations & Word-of-Mouth Marketing, and Promotional Products. Three even-year political campaigns, strong growth in Public Relations & Word-of-Mouth Marketing, and a turnaround in B-to-B Promotions will contribute to a 4.2% CAGR in the forecast period, reaching $89.34 billion in 2016.

In the Business & Professional Information & Services sector, spending will rise 7.2% to $204.43 billion in 2012 and post a 7% CAGR in the forecast period, fueled by solid growth in both Business & Professional Information and Business & Professional Services, particularly those relating to marketing, financial & economic and scientific & technical Information, as well as technology services, such as wireless data access, Software as a Service (SaaS) and cloud computing.

VSS projects spending on Education & Training Media & Services will increase 4.4% to $252.46 billion in 2012 and post a 4.2% CAGR in the forecast period. Solid gains in College Media and Outsourced Corporate Training will offset more modest growth in K-12 and declines in For-Profit Postsecondary Educational Services.

Spending on Entertainment & Leisure Media will increase 4.9% to $293.49 billion in 2012, with strong gains in Subscription TV spending expected to offset weaker growth in Entertainment Media and declines

in Consumer Books. Steady growth in Subscription TV spending and a resurgent Entertainment Media will produce a 4.9% CAGR in the forecast period despite protracted declines in Consumer Book spending.

Traditional Consumer Advertising spending will post a 2.0% gain in 2012 to $146.57 billion. Even-year political and Olympics spending on Broadcast Television and accelerated growth in Broadcast & Satellite Radio and Out-of-Home Media will drive the gain. Broadcast TV, Broadcast & Satellite Radio, and Out-of-Home Media will also drive a 2.1% CAGR in the forecast period. Newspapers, Magazines and Local Consumer Directories will continue to struggle during the forecast period.

Key Trends in Forecast Period for Revenue Streams

All four Revenue Streams ? Advertising, Marketing Services, Consumer End-User and Institutional End-User ? are projected to see positive CAGR in the forecast period, with Advertising posting the largest CAGR at 6.1%. The slower growth will come in spending on items such as home video, box office, books, newspapers and magazines, adding further weight to digital communications? influence and growing impact on the overall picture. Digital will continue to play a key role in the faster-moving Revenue Streams in the forecast period.

VSS projects spending in the Advertising Revenue Stream will grow 5.9% in 2012 to $200.76 billion ? driven by political and Olympics spending on Broadcast Television; growing interest by advertisers in lower-cost Subscription Television; accelerated gains in Out-of-Home Media and double-digit growth in internet, mobile and entertainment media. Advertising spending will posted a 6.1% CAGR in the forecast period to reach $255.23 billion in 2016. This will be fueled in part by three years of Olympics and political ads, and the ongoing shift to alternative advertising, including digital Out-of-Home Media and the brand-related internet and mobile platforms of traditional communications.

Institutional End-User spending is projected to grow 6.0% to $546.63 billion in 2012, with a 5.8% CAGR in the forecast period, reaching $682.41 billion in 2016. Gains in 2012 and the forecast period will come from growth in Business & Professional Information, Business & Professional Services, TV programming, B-to-B live events and related digital platforms, and Outsourced Corporate Training.

Spending in the Consumer End-User Revenue Stream is expected to increase 3.7% to $237.29 billion in 2012, and post a 4.2% CAGR in the forecast period to reach $281.20 billion in 2016, primarily as a result of consumer spending on pure-play and related traditional digital platforms, enhanced Subscription TV services and satellite radio. In the latter part of the forecast period, new console videogame titles will also contribute to growth as the next generation of hardware is released.

Marketing Services spending will increase 4.4% in 2012 to $203.98 billion, and post a 3.9% CAGR in the forecast period to reach $236.16 billion in 2016. VSS projects higher spending on alternative marketing vehicles such as Branded Entertainment and Word-of-Mouth Marketing will lead to increased face-to-face engagement with consumers and drive a return on investment.

Santos signs teen for 50 million euros release fee

Rio De Janeiro, Sep 26

Brazilian top-flight football club Santos has signed 16-year-old sensation Gabriel Barbosa to a three-year contract with a 50-million-euro release fee.

The club announced Tuesday that it had beaten off interest from rival clubs in Brazil and Europe by signing the young star, known as Gabigol, reports Xinhua.

"We are very happy because our family are Santos supporters," Gabigol's father Valdemir Silva Almeida told Globoesporte.

"There were clubs in Europe interested in him but we are very happy that he has joined Santos."

Gabigol follows in the footsteps of Pele and Neymar to join Santos as teenage prodigies.

The deal comes just months after the club also secured fellow 16-year-old Victor Andrade with a hefty release clause.

Gabigol, currently top-scorer in Sao Paulo's Under-17 championship with nine goals, already boasts several sponsorship deals including a lucrative contract with Nike.

This is something I have wanted since I was eight years old," Gabigol said. "I still have a lot to learn but I want to train as hard as I can and climb the ranks as soon as possible."

NEW YORK (AP) ? When you are a hot young starlet in Hollywood, you often get what you want. For Nikki Reed, that meant goose-bump calfskin, and for Chloe Grace Moretz, it was a menswear-inspired design. They are two of the celebrities to work with footwear designer Stuart Weitzman to craft shoes to their specs to help raise money for ovarian cancer research.

Weitzman has a long history of working with stars, and he finds many of them to be "frustrated fashion designers."

"It doesn't surprise me when they make requests or have ideas. They have a desire to create what they wear and what they look like," said Weitzman. "It would be surprising to me if they didn't want to have more input and try design."

The Young Hollywood Cares collection was co-designed this year by Moretz, Reed, Brooklyn Decker, Julianne Hough and AnnaSophia Robb.

Weitzman recalled Moretz's inspiration: "She told me as a kid, she would wear her father's wingtips and oxfords. ... And she wanted to make a shoe like her dad's that was sexy, high and wearable."

Other styles include Decker's gold metallic cap-toe black multistrap ankle boots, and Robb's black pony-hair stiletto pumps with burgundy satin piping.

This is the second round of collaborations, following last year's successful fundraising effort of $80,000, which was done without much promotion or publicity, Weitzman said.

"I want to be more visible," he said. "I have learned it's hard to ask people for money and it's harder to get them to give it, but if you have fun and make some noise, you can rattle it. You'll buy something, even if it costs a little more, but why not for a good cause?"

Proceeds from the collection benefit research at the Folkman Institute/Vascular Biology Program at Boston's Children's Hospital.

Health Insurance for Expensive MRI or CT Scans

September 25th, 2012

Often, health insurances do not cover important body scans for medical treatments like CT scan and MRI scan. While getting insurance from an insurance company, it is important to read the plan and what it covers in detail. Even though, renowned insurance companies like HSL assured provide its clients with complete medical package that includes almost all types of medical coverage but it is still important to compare the health insurance plans of two or more companies and check for MRI scan and CT scan in advance.

Often, for proper diagnosis of a medical condition, a complete body scan is required but often medical insurance from small companies only cover X-rays that are cheaper than CT scan and MRI scan but are not advanced enough and safe to save the insurance cost. This is why it is highly recommended to always buy your medical insurance from the renowned and established insurance companies like HSL assured. Even though, most of the medical experts prefer CT scan or MRI scan over the x-rays as x-rays are not that advanced and there are number of risks associated with the use of x-rays on human body but many people who do not have coverage for CT scan and MRI scan have to choose X-rays to save money. Even though, with the increased dependability of doctors and health experts on these modern scans, most of the insurance companies now cover both type of scans in their health insurance but it is still important to ask if these scans are included or not before buying health insurance.
