This is the act in which you reveal character growth. Not all main characters grow. In many action movies, such as the early James Bond films, there is no character growth. But if you wish to show such growth, this is the place to do it.

If you wish to include a subplot, start it early in the second act. If your book has several subplots, choose one or perhaps two. There is not enough room in a movie for multiple subplots (unless you?re Robert Altman). Besides, multiple subplots, with several characters, will dilute the impact of the main story line.

There should be a Major Reversal or setback of some type in the middle of the second act. Or, if the protagonist has been a victim, this is the point at which he or she begins to take control of their life, even though the challenges become increasingly more difficult.

Near the end of the this act, the protagonist must be at their lowest point of the entire story. This scene is often called ?The Dark Night of the Soul.?

Then, at the end of the second act, the protagonist sees a glimmer of hope, something that will drive them to meet the ultimate challenge of the story, namely, the climax.

The Third Act shows us the ultimate conflict or climax of the story. It is the most dramatic event of the entire movie and needs to be written as such.

The third act must resolve the story one way or another. Either the protagonist achieves their goal or they do not.

It is essential for the protagonist to be a major element of the climax, pushing the story forward. Many beginning screenwriters often let secondary characters fulfill this role. Why? I don?t know.

I once read an action script from a beginner in which the protagonist walks out of the climax scene right before the final battle. Can you believe it?

I cannot emphasize this enough-the protagonist must go head-to-head with the antagonist in order for an audience to feel fulfilled.

This is the act in which you should resolve all subplots, as well.

The third act is usually 10 ? 20 pages.

Once you finish the climax of the screenplay, end it soon. Sure, there may need to be some wrap-up of all the loose ends, but don?t linger. Otherwise you?ll dilute the energy of the climax. You want the reader, and ultimately, the audience, to exit as close to the emotional peak of the story as possible.

Proceeds from the book's sales will go to Lalibert?'s One Drop Foundation,which he established in 2007 to address shortages of potable water around the world through technology and microcredit, as well as educational programs and other outreach.

Salisbury News: Lewes Man Sought in Home Improvement Scam

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Lewes man who allegedly defrauded an elderly woman out of nearly $2,000 in a home improvement scam.

Michael A. Fitzgerald, 29, faces charges of theft $1,500 or greater when the victim is 62 years or older, home improvement fraud and carrying on occupations without a license, state police spokesman Cpl. Bruce Harris said.

The fraud allegedly took place between early December and April 4 at the 72-year-old victim?s home on Capes Cove Lane in Lewes.

Hoosier Ink: Things That Made Me A Better Writer

There have been several things I've done in my life. Three out of the four I listed below have aided me in strengthening my writing craft. Which one is the exception?

1. Amazon review writing

2. Editorial letter writing

3. Songwriting

4. Toastmasters

Have you made your selection? Okay, let me eliminate the options one by one.

Of course, Amazon review writing is not the exception. Writing honest reviews first encourages me to read. Then, it motivates me to interact. I'm also being trained to see what works and what doesn't so I can apply the lessons learned. For those interested, I've written 452 reviews at this moment.

Likewise, editorial letter writing is another way to strengthen one's writing. It forces you to get to the point quickly. Additionally, being creative in how you express yourself increases your chances of being published. I've been multi-published in both the Nashville Tennessean and the Indianapolis Star. In fact, I got paid for having a letter selected by the Tennessean for being the three star letter of the day. A check for $4 and a nice fancy dinner.

That leaves songwriting and Toastmasters. Obviously, songwriting is writing. Toastmasters on the other hand focuses on oral communication and leadership skills. So if you selected Toastmasters as being the one that does not belong, you are incorrect.

I will concede that songwriting has not hurt. Writing lyrics is writing poetry and writing poetry helps you write stronger prose. Also, I've learned that to succeed as a professional Christian songwriter (one who writes songs as a living rather than one who sings those songs), the rules for marketability are the same. However, from that point on, they are two different animals. I have written a few hundred songs, none published and most of them forgotten.

How does Toastmasters help my writing? There is more in common between written and oral communication than you would guess. On one hand, the most effective prepared speeches have been well written. On the other hand, the most effective writing has a voice that sounds like someone is speaking it.

A Toastmasters meeting has three parts to it, all of which relate to writing. First, there's the prepared speeches. Some of the projects, especially in the advanced manual, can help with your writing. For example, there are manuals on Interpretive Reading and Storytelling. Also, one speech in the Speeches By Management manual instructs you to write out your speech in a way that it sounds like a spoken speech rather than a written. I did that project once and had that manual lost before I received credit for it, so I did that same project a second time.

The second part is impromptu speaking, termed Tabletopics. The Topicsmaster of the meeting asks the other members questions, and with no prep the member answers with a 1-2 minute speech. This helps you think on your feet, a skill that helps with creative writing. Additionally, this helps with interviews/elevator speeches which the author might have to give.

The third section is evaluations. Though not called critiques, a good critique is not unlike a good Toastmaster evaluation. The evaluator points out what the speaker has done well, and also gives them areas they can improve on.

I have earned my Distinguished Toastmaster Award in 2008, the highest achievement possible with the organization (though some have multiple DTMs). But my benefit has not come only from my active participation in giving speeches and evaluating my peers. It also has come from listening to speeches. You will notice different voices, which aids in writing dialog.

Naturally, you also have a wide variety of speeches. I've observed persuasive, informative, interpretive, and humorous speeches. I've heard speeches on creating corn-starch, the differences between the three types of whiskey, the importance of getting sleep, fair-trade shopping, the Underground Railroad, and the brown recluse spider.

I would without hesitation encourage any writer to write Amazon reviews and editorial letters. How about Toastmasters? I would given the conditions the writer has the resources and time to invest. The cost is affordable; it is comparable to being a member of the ACFW and the Indiana Chapter. I would advise setting aside two hours at least per meeting and more if you're giving a speech (the meeting frequency varies per club). Those two things might be a roadblock, causing the Toastmaster club to be an obstacle to writing rather than an aid. It depends on the person.

Of course, I'm talking about my experience. You may disagree with my choices. Maybe you have found songwriting to be a more profitable exercise than I consider it for novel writing. Maybe your recommended activities for writing include scuba diving, ballet, and moving furniture. That's the thing about writing ? no two writers are the same. (Sometimes, no one writer is the same person, but let's leave that for trained psychologists.)

Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell in Captain America: The First Avenger Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger (Disney/Marvel) provided one of the best sensations I've felt at the movies this year: the pleasant shock of expectations reversed. Captain America isn't a masterpiece, but it's a solidly crafted, elegant adventure movie that held my attention from start to finish and sent me out into the street energized instead of enervated. I didn't think any comic-book blockbuster could get through the scar tissue that's built up around my heart. This year alone we've already had The Green Hornet, Thor, X-Men: First Class and Green Lantern?movies that have run the gamut from bad to less-bad to really-not-so-bad-in-parts-all-things-considered. But Captain America serves as a reminder of why we started plundering comics for story ideas in the first place: because they're great sources of American populist myth, in addition to being rollicking good fun.

Captain America also proves the point?seemingly simple but oddly difficult for Hollywood producers to retain from one movie to the next?that what makes a film sing isn't the special effects or the casting or even necessarily the direction: It's the script, stupid. Good writing is the sine qua non of good narrative filmmaking. Blue-chip actors are of little use if they're wrapping their mouths around shoddy dialogue, as Oscar-winners Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, and Christoph Waltz have all made clear this year in superhero-supporting roles. And spectacularly destroying Chicago, as Michael Bay did in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, is only thrilling if you've created characters the audience doesn't want to see crushed by rubble.

The writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who also collaborated on all three Chronicles of Narnia films) choose to start their story in March 1941, the date of release of the first Captain Avenger. That comic, created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, carried an unabashed anti-isolationist message that made it controversial in those pre-Pearl Harbor days: The cover showed our flag-emblazoned hero, Steve Rogers, socking Hitler in the jaw. Markus and McFeely's bright idea was to approach Steve Rogers' story as a straight-up period piece: no smirking nods to fans, no stunt performances or fourth-wall-breaking celebrity cameos (with the exception of a questionably necessary epilogue that we'll return to later). This is an earnestly inspirational war picture; it's no accident the closing credits begin with the image of an "Uncle Sam Wants You"-style recruitment poster.

In those days before Pearl Harbor, a barking mad Nazi officer, Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) breaks into a Norwegian crypt to steal a small crystal cube whose possessor can harness near-infinite power. As Schmidt gloats over his prize, we jump ahead to the first confused days after America's entry into the war. The 98-pound patriot Steve Rogers (Chris Evans, his head digitally transposed onto a much smaller man's body) has been trying to get into the Army by any means necessary, including lying to the draft board. Asked why he's so fiercely committed to fighting Hitler, Steve says simply, "I don't like bullies." But his small stature and long list of physical ailments have earned him an unwanted 4-F exemption. When Steve's valor is spotted by Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), a government scientist working on a secret experiment, Erskine convinces a hardboiled Army colonel (Tommy Lee Jones) to hand over the puny recruit.

After a lab procedure turns him into a towering slab of manhood, Steve is first recruited to sell war bonds: Outfitted in a hooded woolen suit and billed as "Captain America," he tours the country performing staged feats of derring-do in front of a line of red-white-and-blue-clad chorus girls. (The musical montage in which we see this act coming together, over a note-perfect period-style song, is one of the movie's many small delights.) The gambit of having the Captain America character be someone else's creation?all Steve wanted was to serve as an ordinary soldier?cleverly circumvents a problem endemic to the superhero origin story: How can our hero credibly go from normal to super without sacrificing his humility?

When Steve hears that his childhood friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) has disappeared behind enemy lines in Italy, a career punching out a Hitler stand-in before cheering crowds abruptly loses its appeal. So, aided by Peggy Carter (the luscious Hayley Atwell), a top agent at the mysterious Strategic Science Reserve, Steve steals away on a one-man rescue mission. In the process, he learns that the renegade Nazi Johann Schmidt has now become Red Skull, a crimson-skinned supervillain who's so unhinged he makes Hitler look mellow. Even under a half-digital, half-latex mask that limits his range of expression, Weaving makes a splendid meanie, striding the halls of his Goth-Nazi-industrial hideout in a billowing leather coat.

Chris Evans, who's been a memorable supporting presence in mainstream movies for a while now (he played the volatile Human Torch in the Fantastic Four films and the arrogant action star Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), effortlessly owns the role of Steve Rogers. He's wholesome but not goody-goody, masculine but not macho, and likeable without begging for the audience's love. In fact there's not a role here that isn't well-cast: Toby Jones as a pusillanimous German scientist, Dominic Cooper as the wealthy industrialist Howard Stark (father of Iron Man Tony Stark). Only when Samuel L. Jackson popped up near the end to remind us that this movie is only the latest chapter in the Ring Cycle-length windup to the coming Avengers movie did I feel torn out of Captain America's remarkably consistent and well-integrated world.

Between the old-fashioned, gung-ho score by Alan Silvestri and the loving attention to WWII period detail, Captain America at times recalls (without ever being as good as) Steven Spielberg's wartime adventure yarn Raiders of the Lost Ark. Tommy Lee Jones, as the cranky Colonel Phillips, gets a few Indiana Jones-worthy rejoinders, and there's a propeller-related stunt that recalls one of Indy's more memorable skirmishes. This Spielberg connection makes sense, given that director Joe Johnston won an Oscar for his work designing visual effects for Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's probably too much to hope that Captain America represents a new kind of superhero movie. I'm just grateful to Johnston for a nice midsummer break from the other kind.

1) If you started with frozen meat, make sure the meat is thawed completely. Trying to cook the inside of a still-frozen piece of meat is next to impossible without burning the outside.
2) When using a charcoal grill, try to start the fire without charcoal lighter fluid. Lighter fluid taste will always get into your meat no matter how much you cook the coals down first. 3) Never poke the bbq meat with a fork after cooking has begun. This is one of the most common mistakes and one of the most deadly for your barbeque. 5) This is more of a food safety mistake. Do not put the cooked meat back on the same plate or platter that the raw meat was on without washing it first. Mixing the cooked with the raw just begs for someone to get sick.

If sauces are desired, they can be added beforehand, during the cooking process, or even after the food comes off the grill. These choices will all create different and enjoyable tastes and flavour?s.

The second barbecue cooking technique uses heat indirectly. This is more appropriate when you?re cooking much larger or whole cuts of meat, such as especially thick steaks, roasts, a whole hog, or a pork shoulder. When you?re cooking using this method, the food is cooked away from the actual source of heat. This usually requires a water pan of some kind in order to maintain the moisture level of the food. The temperatures generally sit in around 250?F. During this cooking method, the lid of the barbeque remains closed most of the time, and the length of the cooking is much longer than in the first method.
