It?s an age-old battle?
the friction that exists between the ?right-brained? marketer and the ?left-brained? salesperson (especially in a small business). But, good news?the battle can be won.
There?s no mistaking the concrete-packed, cement-blocked, wall that erected smack-dab between the marketing and sales departments the day your small business was formed. The question on your mind has always been, ?how do I break that wall down so we can work together?without plotting each others? death?before lunch?? The answer is as simple as the old adage: ?he said, she said? (but only if you understand the meaning).
He said: marketing
She said: sales
He said: branding
She said: customers
He said: image
She said: schmimage
She adds: jerk
He replies: jerk-ier
Sound familiar, small business owner?
Been there?done that? Seems like it goes nowhere, right? But it can go all the way. Okay, ponder this real-life (truly?this actually happened between myself (Dan ? the marketer) and Terri (the saleswoman) in a small business we call bizznesscard) scenario and notice how it ends:
Terri: ?A small business email campaign needs to say this??
Dan: ?Yeah, that?s not gonna happen?nobody responds to that?
Terri: ?I?ve worked in small business sales for 10 years and this works??
Dan: ?I?ve worked in small business marketing longer and it doesn?t?but here?s what does??
Terri: ?Well, I own sales in this small business?so this is what I?m going out with??
Dan: ?Yeah, well?good luck with that??
Terri: ?Do you wanna do lunch??
Dan: ?Step off?I mean, sure?where??
The point is?
you can have more than one cook in the kitchen within your small business, but at the end of the day, you need a create and encourage an environment that allows for differences of opinion?a place where the team understands that they don?t always have to be right. Each individual within the group bring different qualities and experience to the table.
If you?re a small business owner and you have a similar scenario to share, please do so?your perspectives on this age-old battle are more than appreciated?they just may save the life of someone you work with!
