Training Your Dog | Dogs Are Great Pets

training your dog
How do you use a clicker for training your dog because I have heard that they are very effective?

links would be great too.

Clicker training, as a general answer, is way too involved, but I?m happy to give you a few links:

www.clickersolutions.com (good articles, also consider joining the listgroup if you want questions answered or just to read what others are doing and their questions)

www.clickertraining.com (some content is free, others are for sale, also a store for books, dvds, etc)

www.dragonflyllama.com (once you are ready to really get into training! free e-book, some good articles, and also a listgroup for people training this levels approach)

There are some good vids on youtube, I suggest those by kikopup (some are free, some aren?t, but a good organized approach) and there is a free portion of a longer video if you enter clicker training and Virginia Broitman you should find it. She and Sherry Lippman have several videos, my suggestion is The How of BowWow (cheesy title, well put together video, great instruction) available at dogwise.com

Books: although not specific to clicker training, I suggest Patricia McConnell?s Family Friendly Dog Training or Puppy Primer.

good luck, and feel free to post specific questions.

Just read a few other answers and would like to comment:
Clicker training works very well for agility, as far as teaching foundation behaviors and actual obstacle skills. Most of the ?big names? in agility use the clicker to a moderate or greater degree and are very sucessful with it. It is not the only tool in their toolbox, and isn?t used for everything, but can be incredibly effective when used appropriately.
Please DO NOT use the clicker as either a recall cue or a marker for something bad to happen.
