Tomahawk (for Mac)

Apple's iTunes?may be the marketplace at which many consumers purchase their digital music, but that doesn't mean that it's without flaws. The most frequent complaints involve iTunes' perceived bloat, which manifests as long load times as you move between sections. A number of iTunes alternatives have emerged over the years, but one of the most intriguing is Tomahawk, a free, open-source iTunes alternative that lets music lovers listen to tunes aggregated from a variety of sources?your computer's hard drive, Spotify, SoundCloud, Last.fm, and other streaming services. Tomahawk deftly brings those multiple music destinations in one central hub, but a few niggles may prove annoying.

Getting Started
The first time you launch Tomahawk, it automatically scans your computer's hard drive for local audio files and pulls them into "My Collection." The app doesn't do that with each launch unless you set it up to do so within Preferences.

Tomahawk has a familiar paned, iTunes-like interface. The left column offers easy access to your playlists, search history, favorited ("Loved") tracks, hot songs ("Charts"), and other categories.

You can listen to the music on your hard drive, but the magic occurs when you allow Tomahawk to tap Last.FM, Spotify, Grooveshark, and other free and subscription-based services by installing "revolvers" (Tomahawk's name for the music plug-ins) from with-in the app. A small icon to the right of each song highlights the music source. Big names like MOG, Rdio, and Slacker?are missing because, as Tomahawk states, "many do not yet have public APIs." People like me who've spent hours customizing Slacker have very little reason to make the leap to Tomahawk.

The Tomahawk Experience
Still, the revolvers come in handy. When you perform a search, Tomahawk scours your sources (both the music on your computer and stream music services you set up) for content and ranks the results on how closely they match your query. For example, entering "Wu Tang," returned several "Wu-Tang Clan" matches, but they were listed as bad matches because I didn't use the band's proper name. Tomahawk didn't prevent me from firing up "7th Chamber," but it did make me mindful of accurate band names.

Tomahawk?despite its desire to want me to use accurate queries?returns rather loose results. A Red Hot Chili Peppers search showcased tracks not only the famous funk-rock band, but also from a few randoms that have "Chilli" and "Hot" in their names as well. I would've preferred a much tighter search engine to cut down on the clutter, but it still functioned reasonably well.

Search for an artist and Tomahawk serves up an artist page that has a short bio, popular songs, and related artists so there is a music discovery element, too. That said, the music discovery and customization isn't as thorough as Slacker's slider-based options.

The music quality was serviceable (not great) and there was a noticeable delay before the start of each track. Worse, Tomahawk returned a few awful, amateur covers from SoundCloud when I searched for Foo Fighters' "Big Me" and Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Breaking the Girl." There was no way to distinguish them from the legitimate recordings, which proved vexing (or, depending on the level of awful, hilarious).

Tomahawk also lets you create smart playlists based on parameters you set and custom music stations.

Getting Social
Nearly every music service has some form of social networking capability, but Tomahawk lets you connect with others in a manner that's deeper than simply Tweeting or Facebooking a song link.

Tomahawk lets you connect to a buddy's library if you share the same network. Jabber and Twitter connectivity lets you party with people who aren't on the same network. It works remarkably well, and may be Tomahawk's more overlooked (but cool) features.

The Wrap Up
Music fans who easily lose themselves while listening and tweaking their stations will like what Tomahawk offers as it's a very respectable (nearly) all-in-one music listening solution. On the other hand, those who simply like to hit play and lean back may be overwhelmed by the numerous options (and the app itself doesn't do the best job of explaining what certain features do). As such, Tomahawk is an app for the hardcore who can overlook some of the music app's flaws.

FIFA bans 74 for match-fixing in Italy, South Korea

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:57 a.m. ET Feb. 27, 2013

ZURICH (AP) - FIFA has banned 74 more officials and players from world soccer for helping fix matches, this time in Italy and South Korea.

FIFA says it imposed sanctions on 70 people, including 11 who were banned for life, after a series of cases prosecuted by Italian soccer authorities.

FIFA says the charges involved "match-fixing (direct involvement or omission to report match-fixing), illegal betting or corrupt organization (association to commit illicit acts)."

Prosecutors in Cremona, Bari and Napoli have pieced together a conspiracy they believe was organized from Singapore to bet on rigged Italian soccer games.

Last week, Italian authorities detained suspect Admir Suljic, a Slovenian national, when he landed in Milan on a flight from Singapore. Suljic, alleged to be an associate of Singaporean businessman Tan Seet Eng, faces charges of criminal association and sports fraud.

Tan, also known as Dan Tan, is accused of heading a crime syndicate that has made millions of dollars gambling on fixed matches around the world.

Singapore police said last week that Tan was assisting its investigation into alleged match-fixing.

FIFA said the four new South Korean cases follow worldwide sanctions imposed on 10 people last year and a further 41 last month.

The latest global sanctions were announced two days after FIFA extended bans to 58 people found guilty of match-fixing offenses in China. Of those, FIFA expelled 33 from soccer for life, including 2002 World Cup referee Lu Jun.

FIFA can apply worldwide sanctions after national associations complete their own investigations and impose bans.

Balloon crash in Egypt's Luxor kills 19 tourists

LUXOR, Egypt (AP) ? A hot air balloon carrying tourists over Egypt's ancient city of Luxor caught fire Tuesday, and some passengers trying to escape the flames leaped to their deaths before the craft crashed in a sugar cane field. At least 19 tourists were killed in one of the world's deadliest ballooning accidents.

The accident was a new blow to Egypt's tourism industry, which has been gutted by the country's turmoil the past two years. The southern city of Luxor, site of some of the most dramatic pharaonic temples, has been particularly hard hit, with empty hotels worsening the area's poverty.

After the early morning crash, authorities suspended hot air balloon flights, a popular tourist attraction here, while investigators worked to determine the cause. The crash raised accusations that authorities have let safety standards fall amid the political instability since the 2011 fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak ? though the civil aviation chief insisted his ministry keeps stringent inspections of balloons.

The balloon was carrying 20 tourists ? from France, Britain, Belgium, Hungary, Japan and Hong Kong ? and an Egyptian pilot on a sunrise flight over Luxor, officials said.

According to initial indications, it was in the process of landing after 7 a.m. when a landing cable got caught around a helium tube and a fire erupted, according to an investigator with the state prosecutor's office.

The balloon then shot up in the air, the investigator said. The fire set off an explosion of a gas canister and the balloon plunged some 300 meters (1,000 feet) to the ground, according to an Egyptian security official. It crashed in a sugar cane field outside al-Dhabaa village just west of Luxor, 510 kilometers (320 miles) south of Cairo, the official said.

The official and the investigator spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

"I saw tourists catching fire and they were jumping from the balloon. They were trying to flee the fire but it was on their bodies," said Hassan Abdel-Rasoul, a farmer in al-Dhabaa. He said one of those he saw on fire was a visibly pregnant woman.

Bodies of the dead tourists were scattered across the field around the remnants of the balloon, as rescue officials collected the remains in body bags.

The crash immediately killed 18, according to Luxor's governor, Ezzat Saad. Two Britons and the Egyptian pilot were taken to the hospital, but one of the Britons died of his injuries soon after. The other Briton and the Egyptian, who state media said suffered severe burns, were flown to Cairo for further treatment.

Among the dead were nine tourists from Hong Kong, four Japanese ? including a couple in their 60s ? and two other Britons, according to Egyptian officials or tourism authorities from the home countries.

Hot air ballooning is a popular pastime for tourists in Luxor, usually at sunrise to give a dramatic view over the pharaonic temples of Karnak and Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, a desert valley where many pharaohs, notably King Tutankhamun, were buried.

Luxor has seen crashes in the past. In 2009, 16 tourists were injured when their balloon struck a cellphone transmission tower. A year earlier, seven tourists were injured in a similar crash.

The toll puts the crash among the deadliest involving a recreational hot air balloon. In 1989, 13 people were killed when their hot air balloon collided with another over the Australian outback near the town of Alice Springs.

After the 2009 accident, Egypt suspended hot air balloon flights for several months and tightened safety standards. Pilots were given more training and a landing spot was designated for the balloons.

But Tuesday's crash raised accusations that standards had fallen, and many in Luxor were afraid it would only further damage tourism in a city that relies on foreign visitors.

"Tourism is dying here already and the tourists killed in the balloon will make things worse," said Mohammed Osman, head of the Luxor's Tourism Chamber. He blamed civil aviation authorities, who are in charge of licensing and inspecting balloons, accusing them of negligence

"There is no oversight, and no one is checking anything. I don't want to blame the revolution for everything but the laxness started with the revolution," he said. "These people are not doing their job, they are not checking the balloons and they just issue the licenses without inspection."

Civil Aviation Minister Wael el-Maadawi, who flew to Luxor to oversee the investigation, said the balloon that crashed had been inspected earlier this month as a requirement for renewing the company's license. Speaking to Al-Jazeera Mubasher television, he said safety standards were "normally high" and that there must have been extreme circumstances that led to the crash.

"This is a painful accident," he said. "It is premature to say whether it is maintenance or a human error until the investigation is over, whether the tube was unhooked because of a maintenance error or because it was pulled, someone stepped on it and pulled it."

The Civil Aviation Ministry, like much of Egypt's administration, has seen some political disputes since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi came to power in June as Egypt's first freely elected leader.

The ministry was long dominated by military officers or former officers, some of whom have resented control by a civilian president, particularly one who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood. In other ministries, observers say Brotherhood members have been appointed, or included as volunteers, in many posts.

One civil aviation ministry official told The Associated Press that standards have fallen since civilians were brought in to some middle-ranking positions. The official said inspections have become more lax, taking place oncee a month instead of weekly. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to speak on the issue.

Egypt's tourism industry has been decimated since the 2011 uprising and the political turmoil that followed and continues to this day. Luxor's hotels are currently about 25 percent full in what is supposed to be the peak of the winter season.

Scared off by the turmoil and tenuous security following the uprising, the number of tourists coming to Egypt fell to 9.8 million in 2011 from 14.7 million the year before, and revenues plunged 30 percent to $8.8 billion.

Poverty swelled at the country's fastest rate in Luxor. In 2011, 39 percent of its population lived on less than $1 a day, compared to 18 percent in 2009, according to government figures.

Magda Fawzi, whose company operates four luxury Nile River cruise boats to Luxor, said she expects the accident will lead to tourist cancellations. Tour guide Hadi Salama said he expects Tuesday's accident to hurt the eight hot air balloon companies operating in Luxor, but that it may not directly affect tourism to the Nile Valley city.

In August, Morsi flew to Luxor to encourage tourism there, about a month after he took office and vowed that Egypt was safe for tourists.

"Egypt is safer than before, and is open for all," he said in remarks carried by the official MENA news agency at the time. He was referring to the security situation following the 2011 ouster of autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak.

Deadly accidents caused by poor management and a decrepit infrastructure have taken place since Morsi took office. In January, 19 Egyptian conscripts died when their rickety train jumped the track. In November, 49 kindergarteners were killed when their school bus crashed into a speeding train because the railway guard failed to close the crossing.

The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political force and Morsi's base of support, blames accidents on a culture of negligence fostered by Mubarak, under whose rule the country saw a number of devastating accidents.

Researchers discover protein that may control the spread of cancer

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Researchers at the University of Hawai'i Cancer Center have uncovered a novel mechanism that may lead to more selective ways to stop cancer cells from spreading. Associate Professor Joe W. Ramos PhD, a cancer biologist at the UH Cancer Center and his team have identified the role of the protein RSK2 in cancer cell migration, part of the process of cancer metastasis.

Cancer becomes metastatic when cells break away from the primary tumor and spread to other parts of the body. Metastatic cancer is much more difficult to treat and patients with metastatic cancer have a generally worse prognosis. "The cancers that kill are those that spread to other parts of the body or disseminate within the organ," said Ramos. "If we could keep cancer cells confined to the primary tumor mass, we could remove it with less risk of metastasis and later recurrence."

The Ramos team reports that RSK2 significantly increases cell migration in part by reducing integrin activation. Integrins play an important role in cell adhesion to their surrounding tissue and the migration of tumor cells to new locations in the body. RSK is active in both breast and prostate tumors, and promotes proliferation in these cells. It can also promote cell invasion and metastasis in head and neck cancers in addition to lung cancer and neuroblastoma.

"We focused on understanding the process of cell adhesion," said Ramos. "Integrins help the cell move by grabbing onto proteins and cells in their surroundings, pulling, then releasing and grabbing on again. Blocking a cancer cell's ability to adhere and move can control further dissemination of some metastasis. There are drugs that kill cancer cells and there are drugs that stop the division of cancer cells, but there are far fewer drugs that specifically stop the movement of cancer cells. Our work suggests that drugs that interfere with RSKs may help control or prevent metastasis."

The study: "RSK2 Protein Suppresses Integrin Activation and Fibronectin Matrix Assembly and Promotes Cell Migration" is published in the December 21, 2012 edition of The Journal of Biological Chemistry. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3527930/

Playstation 4 Will Not Block Used Games, Sony Confirms

Posted 1 day ago By Frosty - Ryan Foster

Many gamers keeping up with the rumors of the next generation consoles feared the worst- used games being denied access when put into another machine. However, we can all stop hyperventilating as Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed this will not be the case. In an interview with Eurogamer, Yoshida responded to the blatant question with a flat out "So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?" Doesn?t get more concrete than that, huh? Remember, these rumors also applied to the next Xbox, so we all still need to keep our fingers crossed on that one...Gamestop especially.

Cardinal says Latin American or African pope possible

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Cardinal Kurt Koch, a close aide of Pope Benedict who will cast his vote for the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church, says there is no reason why the new pontiff cannot be African or Latin American.

Koch, head of the Vatican department that deals with Christian unity and relations with Jews, also said he had had no doubt that Pope Benedict would resign rather than rule for life, and said that future popes would be free to do the same.

"The challenges of the Church in the world are very different on different continents: in Africa, in Asia, in Latin America. The question is 'where will the challenges be greater, on which continent, should it be a pope for, above all, Latin America, for Africa ... ," Koch told Reuters in an interview.

"I can imagine taking a step towards a black pope, an African pope or a Latin American pope. I can imagine this."

Koch, 62, a soft-spoken Swiss, will be one of the 117 cardinals under the age of 80 who are eligible to enter a secretive conclave to elect the next pope that is expected to start in mid-March.

There has been much speculation in the Church on whether the man to succeed Benedict should be a non-European, which would be a first in more than a millennium.

While the Church in Europe is polarized and has dwindling congregations, the Church in Africa is growing and in Latin America it remains large and vibrant despite inroads by Protestant evangelical groups.

THRIVING

There are several leading candidates from outside the Old Continent.

Latin Americans include Brazilian Odilo Scherer, archbishop of the huge diocese of Sao Paulo and Argentine Leonardo Sandri, who works in the Vatican and whose parents are of Italian origin.

Peter Turkson from Ghana, head of the Vatican's justice and peace department, is often tipped as Africa's front runner.

There is a thriving Church in the Philippines, the largest Catholic country in Asia, birthplace of one cardinal who is often mentioned as a candidate, Luis Antonio Tagle.

Asked to provide a job description for the next pope, Koch paused for few seconds and said: "I think each pope has to have four qualities: First of all, deep faith, then, sound doctrine, charisma and a capacity to govern."

The next pope, whatever his age, could rule for life if he wanted to, like most of his predecessors, or resign for health reasons, Koch said.

Still, he acknowledged that the cardinals were navigating in uncharted waters.

The last pope to leave office willingly was Celestine V, a saintly hermit whose served only a few months before abdicating in 1294 and was imprisoned by his successor in a castle south of Rome. Another pope, Gregory XII, reluctantly abdicated in 1415 to end a dispute to a rival claimant to the papacy.

"It is clear that this is a situation that is totally new. The cardinals must choose the new pope with the presence of the living pope. We still don't know what effect it will have. It makes a great difference if the pope is dead or alive," Koch said.

Benedict has said he would be "hidden to the world" after his resignation on February 28 and the Vatican has said he will not try to influence the choice of his successor. He will move to the papal summer residence south of Rome and then in April, after the conclave, into a convent inside the Vatican.

VERY SECRET

Koch cautioned against making predictions on who the next pope could be.

"The election is very secret, even in the conclave, no one knows who the other person is voting for as we put our ballots in the chalice," he said.

Koch, who was in the room when Benedict announced his resignation to a small group of cardinals in Latin on Monday, said he was surprised only by the timing.

"I always said if any pope would resign it would be Benedict ... this move was very characteristic of his personality. He never wanted to put himself at the centre of things," Koch said.

"We now see that behind the ministry (of any pope) there is a human person ... these are decisions of individual conscience. John Paul decided not to come down from the cross, as he put it, and retained the ministry to his death," Koch said.

"John Paul reflected long and hard on that and came to his decision. Benedict is another person and he came to another decision and I think we have to accept this decision of conscience and not think about all the consequences that it could bring about."

ABOUT 1000 members of a church movement that was started in the Philippines arrived in Bundaberg to help with flood cleanup efforts and donate $60,000 to the relief effort.

Leading the team from the Iglesia Ni Christo (Church of Christ) was Brother Manuel Villapane.

Br Villapane said many of the church members had travelled up to 30 hours to get to Bundaberg.

At a meeting with Bundaberg Mayor Mal Forman he handed over a $20,000 donation to the relief fund.

The group also donated $20,000 each to Bundaberg North and Bundaberg East schools.

Br Villapane said the money came from offerings by church members.

"We have a foundation that helps people suffering different kinds of calamities," he said.

Church members fanned out across flood stricken areas of Bundaberg yesterday to offer their help.

They also distributed hundreds of bags containing personal hygiene items, such as soap and anti-bacterial cream.

Bundaberg East State School deputy principal Mick Brennan said it was an unbelievable donation.

"This will help us out so much," he said.

GMAT Prep: Attitude is critical Kaplan GMAT Blog

GMAT BlogDue to some recent student interaction that is disturbingly similar and concentrated with respect to my total student body as well as a conversation I had this morning with my wife in regard to a few students in her Psych 101 class, it is time to resurrect an old post on the importance of your attitude during GMAT prep. Take a moment to click that link and read the story told therein.

Now, admittedly, upon reread, the story is pretty vague. What I was attempting to get across is that your perception of what you can do is a tremendously important variable in the type of score improvement you can yield with a GMAT test prep regimen.

I am often asked, ?How much can I expect my score to increase after taking this class?? This is a valid query to pose, but one that simply cannot be answered with any precision. A score increase is a factor of several variables. Here?s a simplified equation:

Final GMAT Score = Diagnostic Score + Target Score + Quality of Prep + Quantity of Prep + Attitude

I call this a simplified equation because many of these variables are comprised of several other variables. Take, for example, Quantity of Prep. On its surface, this appears to be a straight forward, easily quantifiable metric. However, you can further break down quantity by total hours of study time spread over a total days of study time. A good rule of thumb is 120 to 150 hours spread across about three months. Then, of course, you can look at how many days per week and how many hours per day and the typical duration of a study session (note the implications of the word ?typical?). At this point, it is easy to see how Quantity of Prep inevitably influences Quality of Prep. Like I said? it?s a simplified equation.

Despite the inherent complexity of the preparation levers mentioned above, let us focus on the final one listed: Attitude.

Coincidentally, in my last post about how Benjamin Franklin would kill the GMAT I included a quote by Henry Ford that says, ?Whether you think you can or can?t, you?re right.? The inimitable and profound truth in this statement cannot be overstated. I have seen, and am currently seeing, way too many students engaged in depressing self-fulfilling prophecies that involve their steadfast disbelief in their ability to learn something. Topics range from the micro, like learning how to set up the ever-useful chart for combined work problems, to the ultimate macro: the GMAT itself.

I have said before in uncountable forums that one?s success on the GMAT is borne of tenacity above all else. And tenacity, as it happens, is built on the back of a positive attitude. So, the next time you find yourself engaged in self-deprecation and making defeatist proclamations, STOP! Remind yourself, instead, that you are highly educated, highly intelligent, and eminently capable of beating the GMAT, for it is the truth.
